Abstract

Cicero's translation of part of Plato's Timaeus inspires us to reflect on the solutions found by that distinguished Latin writer, who had a profound knowledge of the Greek language and was a dilettante of philosophy. The Greek word analogia which Cicero translated as "comparatio pro portione" leads us to think about what it meant to Plato and what an "analogy" means to us, what actually "analogue" means, words used in science as well as in everyday communication.
