Abstract

Since Antiquity Sappho’s lyric poetry has been admired as among the most beautiful examples of the genre. Nowadays we face many obstacles to the appreciation of them: the Greek language to begin with (with all the references that to us may be strange or unknown), the fragmentary state of the poems, the loss of their accompanying music etc. In the translations here presented, I try to bridge the gap between us and the lyricism we find in the poems by using poetical solutions in the translation so as to recreate the poetry.
