From Perfect Paradigmatism to Eidetic Paradigmatism: A Reconstruction of the Platonic Paradigm
Keywords:
Plato, synonymy, Forms, relativesAbstract
This article proposes a reconstruction of Platonic paradigmatism as a relational structure that articulates different levels of reality, which I call “eidetic paradigmatism.” In contrast to Gail Fine’s interpretation of the Platonic paradigm as “perfect paradigmatism,” and Dirk Baltzly’s alternative of truth-makers, this article argues that the fundamental difference between the sensible paradigm and the eidetic paradigm lies not in a distinct explanatory function, but in the ontological nature of the entity that occupies the paradigmatic position. Based on an analysis of Aristotle’s Republic, Phaedo, Timaeus, and the Argument of Relatives, this article argues that Plato begins with a single paradigmatic structure with two modalities: sensible and eidetic.
