Epitome of Zenobius, Synthesized in Alphabetical Order from the Proverbs of Tarreus and Didymus: A Proposal for Translation Into Portuguese

This article consists of the proposal of an annotated translation, in Portuguese, of the first five proverbs from the first century of the Epitome of Zenobius synthesized in alphabetical order from the proverbs of Tarraeus and Didymus (Ζηνοβίου ἐπιτομὴ ἐκ τῶν Ταρραίου καὶ Διδύμου παροιμιῶν συντεθεῖσα κατὰ στοιχεῖον), according to the edition of E. L. von Leutsch and F. G. Schneidewin, included in the first volume of the Corpus Paroemiographorum Graecorum (1839). By way of a brief introduction, an overview of the genesis and general use of proverbs will be presented, as well as of the collections of proverbs in Antiquity. The article also sets out the criteria that the proposed translation seeks to follow, taking into account the peculiarities of the proverbial genre and its possibilities of expression in Brazilian Portuguese. The five proverbs from the Zenobian collection translated and commented here will serve as a preliminary testing ground for a broader translation undertaking still in progress.
