The relationship between body and soul in the Recollection argument in the Phaedo
Keywords:
body, soul, epistemology, anamnesisAbstract
The main goal of this article is to analyze the relationship between body and soul in the Anamnesis argument (Phd. 72e-77d). Despite the criticism addressed to the body a (64e-69e), we’ll show that Socrates is less interested in demonstrating the immortality of the soul in this argument, than in bringing fundamental nuances to this criticism by explaining the inextricable relationship between body and soul in the process of acquiring knowledge. We’ll show that an adequate analysis of this argument must consider a double register: the elaboration of an epistemological discourse inseparable from a conception of the soul as the seat of cognition.
