Aristotle the historian: the opinion of predecessors as a historical source in the construction of the diaporetic method
Keywords:
Aristotle, history, philosophy, PoeticsAbstract
Aristotle’s contributions to the History of Philosophy are notorious. However, the extent to which the Stagirite’s quotations of the views of predecessors reflect their thinking is subject to disagreement. This article aims to explore this historiographical aspect of Aristotle through an exploratory research with a bibliographical approach that sustains the understanding of the concept of “history” in Poetics IX, 1451a36-1451b7 and the use that the philosopher makes of the opinions of his predecessors in his method of conducting philosophical research.
