An analysis on the definition of friendship in the Nicomachean Ethics
Keywords:
Aristotelian ethics, Friendship, Utility, PleasureAbstract
The controversy about the legitimacy of relationships for pleasure and for utility as genuine kinds of friendships in the Nicomachean Ethics (NE) is here studied, with a discussion about Aristotle’s usage of the expression “wishing him good” (ἐκείνου ἕνεκα): (i) a self-centered wishing good to another, in the sense that X does something to Y for the sake of X herself/himself or (ii) a wishing good to another for her/his own sake, in the sense that X does something to Y for the sake of Y herself/himself. We take our stand on “ii”, where “wishing good” means wishing good to another for her/his own sake. Still, we defend the view that only friendship between virtuous people can be properly considered friendship in the NE.
