Emotions in Attic Greek funerary epigrams of the 4th Century BC: the rational component

Abstract

This text analyzes emotions in Attic Greek funerary epigrams (compiled by Hansen, CEG); particularly those that appear in Aristotle as affections of pain and pleasure in relation to virtue (Nicomachean Ethics, 1105b). The goal is to prove that these appear as reflections of rational elements, rather than as actual manifestations of grief. The analysis divides into two: emotions that appear in epigrams addressed to men and those that appear in epigrams addressed to women, so as to illustrate, by means of these seemingly most intimate testimonies, what 4th Century BC society demanded of the two genders.
