The problem of the idea of the name in Plato
Keywords:
Cratylus, language, name, ideaAbstract
Every Platonic dialogue is full of problems and mysteries that are difficult to solve for those who seek to grasp the meaning of Plato’s words. In this article, we want to deal with one of these mysteries: what is this idea of the name (τὸ τοῦ ὀνόματος εἶδος) to which the philosopher refers in the Cratylus? To be more specific, is it a single idea for every name or are there as many ideas for names as there are names themselves? The interpretations seem to polarize around these two opposites, and the difficulties are many for both readings. This paper will attempt to present the complexity of the problem and to point to a possible solution.
