Dialectical Mysteries: A Study of the Experience of the Eros of Diotima in the Symposium of Plato

Abstract

In this paper we argue that the imagery of the Diotima-Socrates-Alcibiades triad could be read as a representation and a re-signification of the imagery of the Mysteries carried out in Plato’s Symposium. For this purpose, we will need to have recourse to some images present in the dialogue that seem to reflect elements of marginal Greek religiosity, briefly dwelling thereby on some of the elements that constitute the imagery of the Mysteries in Plato’s time, as well as some of the idiosyncrasies of the historical Alcibiades, especially with regard to the controversies concerning the Eleusinian Mysteries.
