The hero as political problem: the conflict between identity and alterity in the theater of Dionysus
Keywords:
tragedy, hero, politics, AntigoneAbstract
The main goal of the present text is to show that the conflict between identity and alterity played a key role in Greek tragedy. For this purpose I will first discuss the links between Greek tragedy and Dionysus, to whom tragedy was originally dedicated, trying to uncover common traits. Then, I will highlight points of continuity between archaic epos and the heroic ideal in tragedies. Lastly, I will bring together some of the ideas developed in the text, so as to test them against one of the tragedies, Antigone.
