The motionless arrow: Zeno of Elea’s and Plato’s influence on the Physics of Aristotle
Keywords:
Aristotle, Plato, Zeno of Elea, time, Aristotelian PhysicsAbstract
This work, through the study of the paradox of the arrow, shows the doctrinal and methodological effect that the dialectical procedures of Zeno of Elea and of the treatment of time in Plato’s Parmenides had on Aristotle’s Physics. Aristotle’s distinction of the senses in which we can speak of present time and of place, and the basic elements of his conception of motion, are forged in the heat of his discussion with these two philosophers, as he searches for the possibility conditions for the scientific status of physics.References
