Abstract

This paper focuses on two issues related to the concept of difference, which is the Sophist’s big discovery. First, we will try to clarify the specific status the concept acquires in relation to not-being, since it is possible to read this not-being as difference tout court or as part of difference, due to an apparent oscillation in the dialogue. Second, we will shed light on the particular characterization of the sophist who, in view of his portrayal as different from the wise, ends up working as a small-scale model that proleptically anticipates relative not-being.
