Love and Reason in the Educational Project of the Platonic City
Keywords:
Education, Polis, Soul, Reason, LoveAbstract
The purpose of this paper is to show how the Platonic conception of education is structured by combining rationality with the impulse of love. For the philosopher of the Academy, the souls of mortals are only able to recover their transcendent nature if endowed with reason, because reason alone allows the soul to aspire towards what is “best”. Although rationality is capable of concentrating in souls their ability to move towards the Good, souls will achieve nothing if they are not moved by Love. Therefore Love and Reason, united in the “love of knowledge”, are the engine and the ultimate goal of the educational process.Downloads
