Polybius against Phylarchus, or Critique of Tragic Historiography
Keywords:
Polybius, Pragmatic History, Phylarchus, Tragic HistoriographyAbstract
Polybius criticizes the tragicizing conception of writing history as he considers it to have been employed by his antecessor Phylarchus, opposing to it constitutive elements of his pragmatic history. In doing so he raises the problem of the definition of tragic historiography when connecting it to elements of his own historiographical project.Downloads
