Abstract

In Plato's view man is not only responsible for the short time of his present life, but for all time. The successive incarnations of the immortal soul depend on the conduct of the individual in this life. This 'eschatological' responsibility makes it necessary to use one's time for achieving homoiósis theoi (the ultimate goal of human life). Relevant passages in Plato are analysed to get a better understanding of his concept of a truly philosophical life as characterized by scholé and responsible behaviour. Special attention is given to what the dialogues say about the temporal structure of dialectical studies.
