Abstract

This article analyzes the layer of philosophical meanings that were superimposed on the term daímon (mythological in origin and rich in popular imagery) in the course of Greek Philosophy's development. The term and its significations are analyzed under three headings: 1) its usage in Hesiod and Heraclitus; 2) its relation to human physis and éthos (where Parmenides' and Democritus' views particularly stand out); 3) the meaning Socrates gave to it.
