Abstract

Starting from Plotinus’ exegesis of the Heracles myth – either an athlete of virtue or an image of the double condition of humankind – we investigate the relationship between passion, virtue, purification and pleasure. An investigation of these elements in Plotinus’ ethics opens up a valuable way of questioning the purely dualist interpretation of Plotinian anthropology. The process by which such elements relate to one another must be understood in the context of the continuum of the life of the philosopher, for whom the ultimate rule of life is the ineffable One.
