Abstract

This paper analyzes, on the basis of an inquiry into the relations between areté, nobility and wealth in the Homeric poems, what the essential meaning of archaic aristocratic ethics was. Economic factors were closely connected to the essence of aristocratic ethics. In this way, assessment of wealth was intrinsic to the ethical aspect for the Ancient Greeks. Therefore, an inquiry into the ancient Greek economy will concern not only questions of politics but also equally the analysis of ethics and the study of values in general.
