Abstract

It is usually assumed that thinkers came to be considered as philosophers in the early decades of the 5th century B.C. If that presupposition is correct, none of the intellectuals of an earlier time, from Thales to Empedocles, whom we were taught to honor as philosophers, were considered as such during their lifetime. They would have received the name “philosophers” as an a posteriori honor, from 330 and 345 B.C. In this paper, the author analyses the ways in which Thales was honored as one of Athens’ sophoi.
