Abstract

Plato and Aristotle are philosophizing as Greek life is drawing to a close, and that is why Hannah Arendt characterized that life as “politically decadent society” crossed by an agonistic spirit. We want to explore this way of understanding the emergence of the pólis by looking at the double meaning bestowed on the term by those twin Greek philosophers who were living during the decline of the pólis. The two had a long association but Aristotle, the disciple, had to bear the accusation of ingratitude for preferring truth and neglecting the teachings of Plato his master. For Plato the emergence of the Greek pólis is linked to justice. For Aristotle, however, it lies in friendship. We ask, then, how the transition from one to the other came about. We confront a broad topic that touches on various ethical, political, anthropological and metaphysical issues.
