Abstract

This paper starts from the role of divination in classical and archaic Greek culture and from Plato’s particular interest for its different forms. Of the three images of mantic activities in the works of Plato, the first two, the one of divine inspiration and the one founded on technical competence, have their origin in the culture of his time, while the third, elaborated by Plato, is that exerted by Socrates when he links the divination with the human soul and the exercise of philosophy.
