What is the Meaning of Epistéme in the socratic proposition areté is epistéme?

Despite its apparent clarity, the fundamental proposition of the Socratic ethics areté is epistéme is very obscure. The most obscure point concerns the term epistéme. A revision, therefore, seemed to be indispensable. My opinion is that the correct intellection of the term epistéme depends on our understanding of the Socratic self-gnosis.
