About the Journal

Focus and Scope

1. Hypnos is a journal for Greco-Roman Philosophy. We also seek to increase the dialogue between Philosophy and other subject areas in Classical Antiquity that are nowadays well established in universities: Literature, History, Philology etc. It is the conviction of Hypnos that researchers in Philosophy should approach the culture of Antiquity in a comprehensive way. The Editors pursue this aim by publishing not only texts that are specific to Philosophy, but also those that concern the areas of Literature, Linguistics, History, Psychology, Anthropology, and so forth. Hypnos has a generous policy as regards acceptance of works that extend beyond the academic boundaries. Basically the journal is a vehicle to enhance the study of Greco-Roman studies and to further interactions between students in the area, whether they are Brazilian or not, and whether they are academic scholars or not.
2. The Editors of Hypnos have adopted the policy that, despite the preference of the journal for studies in the Philosophy of Classical Antiquity, studies in periods of philosophy other than that, up to and including the pre sent day, can also be published provided that they are in agreement with the main theme for each issue. So if a particular issue’s central theme is, say, “Ethics”, then texts from periods of the History of Philosophy other than Antiquity and which deal with Ethics will be welcome.
3. Papers not pertaining to the main theme for a particular issue of the journal, but presenting a relationship between a Greek or Roman thinker and another from a historical period other than that of Classical Antiquity, may be accepted for evaluation by the Consultative Council and the Editorial Council. Texts from other areas of investigation besides those of Philosophy or Classical Studies might be featured occasionally, depending on the editors’ acceptance and on the pertinence and importance of the given text for philosophical studies in Brazil.
